How To Prepare Your Child For A New Baby In The Family
Are you expecting a new baby? Perhaps you already have a child, either from a previous marriage or from a new marriage. Either way, you are probably having mixed emotions about having a new baby in the family. On the one hand, you may be ecstatic over bringing a new life into the world. Or, you might even be adopting a baby, thus bringing a new member to the family.
On the other hand, you might be a bit concerned that the child you already have may feel misplaced or even jealous. From asking your child to help you decorate the baby's room to enrolling him or her in daycare, here are some ideas that might help you to prepare your child when there will be a new baby in the family.
Working Together - Do you know if you're having a boy or a girl baby? Either way, consider letting your child help in any way that you can. For example, think of letting your child pick out the color of paint for the nursery, and ask him or her to help you to select the furniture. Consider choosing two or three styles of furniture that you like, and ask your child to make a selection from those choices. And, as you decorate the baby room, think of letting your child purchase something new for his or her own room.
For example, when you buy stuffed animals for the baby, think of letting your child pick one out to put on his or her own bed. Think of buying picture books with your child, explaining that he or she might enjoy showing the new baby the pictures and even helping him to learn the letters of the alphabet as he or she gets older.
Going To Daycare - Have you thought of enrolling your child in a daycare center? If you do this even before the new baby comes into your family, your child will already be learning to take turns and to share toys. Your child will be cared for by a person that he or she can learn to trust. Your child will learn that it's fun to be with other children, thus looking forward to playtimes with a new baby brother or a new baby sister. If you do decide to enroll your child in daycare, think of asking him or her to learn songs that he or she can later sing to the baby. Think of enrolling your child just for two or three mornings a week until you think he or she is ready to spend more time there.
